«In our society the plasticity of the body has become common knowledge. Anatomy isn’t a destiny but an accessory of presence, a raw material to redefine and to submit to the design of the moment.»
Lukas Zpira
With this photographic project my goal was to gather two opposite worlds of our society, plastic surgery and body modifications (or underground surgery). These two worlds resemble each other and are born from the same motivation: to please others or oneself. There is not much difference between the woman who wants to get a breast implant, and another person who chooses to be tattooed. They are both looking for perfection, working to resemble either an ideal or a model, and belong to a group. But at the same time they also strive to feel unique. The body becomes something changeable. Thanks to technology, reality may be closer to our desire to be and appear. The possibility to intervene on our aspect is a proper human capacity. In some societies the body modification symbolizes the transition from an animal condition, which is not aware of its physical aspect, to a human being who takes over his body identity.
